Ice-fishing contests draw good turnouts

Michigan City — Thirty ice anglers bundled up to brave frigid temperatures on Saturday morning during the Annual Michigan City Chapter of the Izaak Walton League ice fishing contest. Chapter Treasurer Tracy Pilipiak of Michigan City said that, overall, they were pleased with the turnout.

“We consider the event a success, especially with the colder temperatures,” Pilipiak said as he warmed up in the clubhouse where hot chocolate and chill were served for a small fee. “It’s great that outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen that do not even know about our chapter have the opportunity to see our facilities and see what we are about. At every event we pick up a few new members.”

Among the anglers drilling holes and moving about on the 26-acre Lake Walton was Shane Warrington of LaPorte, who was ice fishing with pal Eric Cusick.

“The action has been pretty good for bluegill,” Warrington noted. “We have been fishing in 12 to 15 feet of water and getting most of the ‘gills right off of the bottom of the lake on Glo-shrimp gigs. Some of the strikes have been real aggressive, while at other times the bite has been light.”

Chuck Trout, another contest participant, explained that he took a dozen bluegill in 10 feet of water, fishing six to eight feet down below the surface of the ice.

“I had the best success orange/pink Glo-jigs with waxworms,” Trout stated.

Winners were in respective categories: Perch: Rob Shail – 9.5″; Bass: Tim Tarchala – 12.5″; Bluegill: Mark Marz – 9 inch; and Crappie: Jeremy Graham – 9.5″.

Pike contest

Fifty-two ice-fishermen attended the 1st Valpo Pike Contest sponsored by The Hook, Line and Sinker Bait Shop, 5308 N. Calumet Avenue, Valparaiso, said co-owner Vicky Kirk.

“Unfortunately, no one caught a legal size northern pike that was 20 inches in length,” Kirk explained. “We are going to take the $75 prize and add it to our next ice-fishing contest which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009. In the next contest we will add the other species like bluegill, crappie, bass and walleye.”
