Feds propose habitat protection for elusive Alabama sturgeon
May 27, 2008
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — The government wants to name 326 miles of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers as critical habitat needed for survival of the Alabama sturgeon.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proposed the designation to protect the elusive fish on Tuesday. The shovel-nosed sturgeon has been listed as an endangered species since 2000.
Members of an industry group are worried that the designation could affect commercial river navigation in the Mobile River basin in southwest Alabama.
The Fish & Wildlife Service has said it does not expect management of river flows to change because of the proposal.
